Former Physician Board Member Joins Medical Office; Appointments Strengthen Leadership with Deep Expertise in Value-Based Kidney Care
BOSTON – Feb. 4, 2025 – Interwell Health, a value-based kidney care provider, has appointed Michael J. Casey, MD, a highly respected nephrologist and president of North Carolina Nephrology, P.A., as its newest board member. Dr. Casey joins Dr. Charles Zachem as board members chosen by Interwell’s physician investors.
Dr. Casey has over two decades of nephrology expertise and is a strong early adopter of value-based care models for kidney disease. He is also a dedicated researcher, serving as a principal investigator in numerous clinical trials focused on improving treatments for chronic kidney disease and hypertension. Dr. Casey succeeds former board member Dr. Carney Taylor, who has decided to join Interwell’s medical office on a full-time basis.
“Nephrologists are at the heart of our care model, and their leadership ensures our provider partners are supported by those who truly understand the challenges of frontline care,” said Robert Sepucha, CEO of Interwell. “Dr. Casey has been one of our strongest physician partners, as he and his practice have helped lead the way in delivering the benefits of value-based care to their patients. I am excited for him to bring that same leadership and insight to our Board as we continue to drive better clinical outcomes for patients and reduce the cost of care to our payer partners and the healthcare system as a whole.”
Dr. Carney Taylor joins other physician leaders in Interwell’s medical office, including Dr. George Hart, Dr. Julie Dominguez, and Dr. Terry Ketchersid. Dr. Taylor previously served as co-president of Eastern Nephrology Associates in North Carolina. Under his leadership, Eastern Nephrology consistently achieved some of the highest quality scores nationally in the government’s value-based programs.
“We are thrilled to welcome Carney to our medical office leadership at Interwell,” said Dr. Hart, chief medical officer at Interwell. “His frontline experience expanding value-based models and improving patient lives will be critical in helping other providers better support people living with kidney disease.”
In 2024, Interwell announced it had achieved leading results in the first year of the government's value-based model for kidney care including the highest quality scores based on the program's metrics and the largest total savings. The results demonstrate how Interwell’s comprehensive approach, which includes personalized care management support (Interwell 360), a nephrology-specific EHR (Acumen® Epic Connect), and predictive analytics, is setting a new standard for specialty value-based care.
